Summary
This innovative and ambitious project aims to tackle the root causes of illegal migration in West Africa by offering viable economic alternatives through the development of local entrepreneurship. By combining in-depth research and concrete action, our aim is to slow down illegal migration flows while strengthening local economies. We firmly believe that activating the entrepreneurial potential of local people can transform communities and offer sustainable opportunities.
Objectives
- In-depth understanding of the motivations behind illegal migration through qualitative and quantitative research.
- Identification of high-risk areas and entrepreneurial opportunities specific to each local context.
- Development of an entrepreneurship programme including training, support and funding modules tailored to the needs of local populations.
- Reducing illegal migration by creating attractive and sustainable local jobs.
- Strengthening local economies by supporting sustainable and innovative entrepreneurial initiatives.
Methodology
To achieve these objectives, our methodology is designed to be participatory, inclusive and rigorous, comprising several key stages:
- Literature review: Analysis of existing studies on illegal migration, strategies for slowing down migration and the role of entrepreneurship.
- Data collection: Conducting interviews, surveys and analyses in the field to gather concrete data on migration trends, push factors and entrepreneurial needs.
- Data analysis: identifying high-risk areas, assessing local needs and understanding the dynamics of illegal migration.
- Study of existing strategies: Review of successful entrepreneurship initiatives in similar contexts and assessment of their applicability to our project.
- Design of the entrepreneurship programme and activities. Development of training and support modules tailored to local needs and coaching activities for potential entrepreneurs.
- Implementation of the pilot programme. Selection of participants, launch of the programme in identified high-risk areas and regular monitoring of progress.
- Monitoring and evaluation: Measuring progress, collecting post-implementation data, conducting follow-up surveys and adjusting actions to maximise impact.
Project limits and boundaries
- Limited geographical scope: The project will initially focus on a few identified high-risk areas to ensure effective implementation and close monitoring.
- Limited resources: Mobilising the necessary financial and human resources will be crucial to the success of the project.
- Limited timeframe: Long-term impacts will require ongoing monitoring beyond the initial duration of the project, with the potential for project extensions.
Expected results
The expected results of this project include:
- Creating local jobs through entrepreneurship, offering economic alternatives to young people and thus reducing the economic motivations for illegal migration.
- Strengthening local economies with sustainable and innovative businesses that can attract additional investment and generate economic growth.
- A better understanding of migration dynamics that can inform public policy and future action, enabling more effective management of irregular migration flows.
Impacts of the project
- For local communities: Increased economic opportunities, improved living conditions and reduced illegal migration.
- For government authorities: Gaining a better understanding of migration dynamics and effective solutions for managing them.
- For partner organisations: Building capacity and resources to support local entrepreneurship and contribute to sustainable economic development.
Outlook
Prospects include:
- Geographical expansion: Extend the project to other high-risk areas, taking advantage of the lessons learned and best practices developed.
- Strengthening partnerships: Working with more local, national and international players to maximise the impact and scope of the project.
- Sustainability: Identifying and securing additional sources of funding to ensure the sustainability of entrepreneurship initiatives beyond the initial duration of the project.
